Denmark’s sovereign, who is celebrating her 83rd birthday, was seen on the balcony of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen on Sunday afternoon (April 16) with all of her grandkids beside her.

Back in September, Queen Margrethe revealed the big news to the press, and seemingly blindsided her youngest son, Prince Joaquim, with the news, as it effects all four of his children.

At the time, she explained that she made the decision so that they would be “able to shape their own lives, without being limited by the special considerations and duties that a formal affiliation with the Royal House of Denmark involves.”

The grandchildren affected were Nikolai, Felix, Henrik, and Athena. They are now known as His Excellency Count of Monpezat or Her Excellency Countess of Monpezat.

Nikolai and Felix are the sons of Joaquim and his former wife, Countess Alexandra; while he shares Henrik and Athena with his current wife, Princess Marie.

Meanwhile, Margrethe‘s other four grandchildren – Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, did keep their titles. They are the children of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary.

Here’s how Frederik reacted to the news of his nephews and niece losing their HRH titles.

Queen Margrethe now holds the title of the world’s longest reigning female monarch. The title was previously held by Queen Elizabeth, who passed away in September 2022.
