Deborah Gist Bio

She started her career as a teacher in college, majoring in early childhood education at the University of Oklahoma. She has two master’s degrees—one in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and one in primary education and curriculum from the University of South Florida. Her doctoral degree was likewise earned at the University of Pennsylvania.

She is a native of Tulsa and a Memorial High School graduate of TPS. She returned to Tulsa because she loved it and has been serving as team leader for Tulsa Public Schools for the past seven years.

Because of her efforts in Rhode Island, she has been named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. According to her TPS biography, Gist claimed that traveling 110 miles to the state capitol to lobby for financial increases that would further help teachers and students was her most fulfilling experience.

Gist is an active Tulsan who serves on the board of Greenwood Rising as well as the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Commission. She also serves on the boards of the Boy Scouts of America Indian Nations Council, the Tulsa Area United Way, the Junior Achievement of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, and Junior Achievement of Oklahoma.

She is one of the founders of Chiefs for Change, a group dedicated to fostering good and varied education in nearby school districts. Since July 2015, Gist has served as Superintendent, earning multiple grants and honors for TPS. Following the continuous conflict between the district and State Superintendent Ryan Walters over accreditation difficulties, she made the choice to leave TPS. Walters has been a steadfast opponent of Gist holding her accountable for TPS’s problems.

Deborah Gist Latest News

Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist today unexpectedly announced her resignation after weeks of heated disagreements with State Superintendent Ryan Walters, whom local school leaders have suspected of wanting to take over the district.

It is with a sad heart that I have decided to stand down from the superintendency, Gist wrote in a text message to Dan Potter, host of the KRMG Morning News. This afternoon, I will make this announcement to our colleagues and family. Wednesday night’s special board meeting will be used to discuss my departure and a temporary position.

Her decision, she continued, “offers the best chance for control of our schools to remain in Tulsa, aligned with the values of our community.” In her statement, Gist promised to have “more to share soon.”

In a statement about her departure, Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum stated, “I am tremendously thankful for the service of Dr. Deborah Gist to our city. Just last week, he acted as a type of mediator during what he said was a cordial and fruitful meeting between Gist and Walters. While serving as the superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools, Dr. Gist overcame some of the biggest obstacles facing the city’s kids, including low teacher compensation that makes it difficult for us to compete with other states and a lack of adequate facilities.

She was always prepared to challenge authority on behalf of the kids she had devoted her life to helping. I would like to thank Dr. Gist for what she has done for Tulsa on their behalf as well as on behalf of our community.

At its meeting on Thursday, the State School Board is anticipated to decide whether or not to accredit Tulsa Public Schools.
