Ironman Wisconsin Dax Bakken Obituary and Cause of Death
Over the weekend, a 51-year-old man died while competing in the Ironman Wisconsin triathlon, according to event officials. On Facebook, race organizers confirmed the death of a runner during the IRONMAN Wisconsin triathlon on Sunday. The man’s name was Dax Bakken, an Army veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm and was a father of three, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help his wife and children. Bakken passed out during the cycling phase of the race near the hamlet of Cross Plains, according to IRONMAN Wisconsin officials.
He was treated by a race official and an off-duty police officer before being taken to a local hospital by an ambulance, where he was later confirmed dead by a race spokeswoman. Dax Bakken’s obituary and funeral information will be released by his family soon.
Dax Bakken dies in hospital: his family weeps
According to family members on GoFundMe, Bakken “trained and dreamed” of participating in the entire 140.6-mile triathlon, which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run. The father was the “primary support” for his family, which included his wife, eight-year-old daughter and two children. He had just finished his master’s degree.
Bakken worked as a senior programmer and development manager at Whitsell Innovations in Madison, according to his LinkedIn profile. A triathlete was killed while cycling a week before the Ironman World Championships. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, two people died during the swim portion of the 2019 triathlon, which took place in nearby Lake Monona and was shorter at 70.3 miles.
