David Stern was a prominent American lawyer and business executive. David Stern is remembered for his contributions to the development and expansion of the NBA’s audience and for being the longest-serving commissioner.
Early life
David Stern was born on September 22, 1942and he went 78 years at the time of his passing on January 1, 2020. David’s full name is David Joel Stern. Also originally from Manhattan, New York, David grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. Speaking of his family, David’s parents were his mother Anna (née Bronstein), who lived from 1918 to 1990, and his father William Stern, who lived from 1918 to 1980.
Furthermore, David came from a Jewish family and had two brothers. David’s father ran a Jewish delicatessen. Talking more about his childhood, David was a fan of the New York Knicks. Similarly, David considered Carl Braun his hero and David also attended games at Madison Square Garden with his father.
Additionally, David played basketball in adulthood. However, he suffered a serious injury to his right knee while playing in a New York Bar League game. Regarding his educational background, David graduated from Teaneck High School in 1959. Later, David attended Rutgers University, where he graduated in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
Additionally, at the aforementioned university, David was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. Later, he attended law school at Columbia University. From there, David received a doctorate in law in 1966.
Death
David suffered a brain hemorrhage on December 12, 2019. The business executive subsequently underwent emergency surgery. Sadly, David passed away on January 1, 2020 in Manhattan at the age of 77.
After his passing, all NBA teams wore black bands on their jerseys for the remainder of the 2019-20 season. This was like a David Stern throwback. Several basketball legends and players, including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, among others, mourned David’s death. Sadly, Kobe also passed away just 25 days after David’s death due to a helicopter crash.

Professionally, David Stern was a lawyer and business executive. David was famous as commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1984 to 2014. During his tenure, David also oversaw the growth of NBA basketball into one of the most popular sports in the world during the decades of 1990 and 2000.
Additionally, people credit David for developing and expanding the NBA’s audience internationally through exhibition games, training camps, and recruiting more international players. Similarly, the NBA also opened 12 offices in cities outside the United States following David’s instructions. The games were also broadcast to more than 200 territories in more than 40 languages.
Additionally, David is also behind the founding of the Women’s National Basketball Association, the NBA G League, and the NBA Development League. Under her direction, the NBA also launched its digital presence with NBA.com, NBA League Pass and NBA TV. Additionally, David established the NBA’s social responsibility program called NBA Cares.

Starting the NBA in 1966 as an outside advisor, David then became general counsel in 1978 and finally executive vice president of the league in 1980. David Stern was also the commissioner from 1984 onwards.
30 years later, David retired in 2014. In the history of the major North American sports leagues, Stern became the commissioner with the longest tenure. The late executive was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014, as well as the FIBA Hall of Fame. In early 1998, David was also inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
Additionally, David served on the Rutgers University Board of Overseers. He was also chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of Columbia University. The late executive was also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

David Stern was married to Dianne Bock Stern from November 27, 1963 until his death. The couple shared two sons, Eric and Andrew. Additionally, the family resided in Scarsdale, New York.
