Dave Rover’s Story

He had no desire to go to war at all. He received his draft notice at the height of the Vietnam War. He joined the Navy instead of the infantry because he didn’t want to serve in the infantry, and in Vietnam he was gunner on the Brown Water Black Beret.

David was charred unrecognizably eight months after a business trip to Vietnam when a phosphorus grenade he was about to throw exploded in his finger. Because of that incident, he was hospitalized for fourteen months and underwent many important surgeries. The miracle of his life and survival.

He is an excellent communicator and has given speeches at various venues, including businesses, men’s and youth conferences, public schools, and military installations. Dave regularly appears on national television talk shows. He founded and continues to work as a missionary in Vietnam and other countries.

He discusses topics that are important to his audience and offers possible solutions using examples from his own life. Dave creates a story of strength, loyalty, and survival that moves and changes those who hear it. He often draws on his combat experiences of loneliness, peer pressure, disfigurement and heartbreak, as well as his successes in life. His faith and the positive relationships he has with his parents, wife, children, and grandchildren are the foundation of his hope.

The Navy Department made up for its mistake by awarding Dave with Purple Hearts and several additional medals for his service 34 years after he was wounded. He is particularly qualified to speak about the claims of servicemen they served, wounded, and rehabilitated in wartime. He is often asked to speak to military personnel stationed at home, as well as those serving overseas in Iraq and elsewhere.

In recognition of Dave’s life and incredible contributions, he received an honorary doctorate in May 2005. Rover Missionary Association (REA) and Rover Education Assistance Program (REAP), both two nonprofit organizations based in Fort Worth, Texas, both founded by Dave Roever. He also serves as their president and president.
