Accusation of a crime
Four young men, Armando Lazo (17), Bobby (Robert) England (18), Jesse Hernandez and Juan Medina, returned home after a house party on April 10, 1993. Someone lit a fire after a while when they reached the crossing. According to the story, Lazo and England were shot, and Džesi and Medina escaped. Officers Marquez, Graves, Arbogast and Laredo of the El Paso Police Department (EPPD) investigated the murder. Jesse and Medina informed authorities that they were unable to identify the shooters. Marquez later took Michael Johnston (15) into custody and interrogated him for almost 8 hours. The policemen even threatened him with the death penalty.
On April 21, 1993, Marquez arrived with another suspect, David Rangel, 17, and began questioning. EPPD officers intimidated the suspects into accepting confessions. David said that his cousin Daniel Villegas (16) killed Laza and England. He also claimed that he did not commit the crime.
