Dakota Johnson opens up about her struggle with depression and how her boyfriend Chris Martin once noticed she was going through a tough time, when she didn’t even know it herself.
The 34-year-old actress spoke about the moment during a speech she gave at the 2023 Hope Depression Research Foundation annual luncheon earlier this month in New York City.

“A few weeks ago, I was having a sad day and my partner said to me, ‘Are you really struggling?’ and I said ‘No?’ And he said, ‘Baby, you’re wearing a Cats t-shirt.’ Like in Cats the music. Turns out he was really struggling. But that moment he picked me up and got me out of there,” he said (via MSN).
Dakota has spoken about her depression in the past, which she didn’t realize at first.
“I felt extremely stressful when I found out that the foundation was interested in giving me this advocacy award. At first I thought, ‘Wait, how do you know I’m depressed?’” she said. “It turns out I’ve actually talked about depression several times, as the foundation let me know after I frantically sent an email saying, ‘What am I going to talk about?’ Then they sent me all these snippets from 2015, so it turns out I’m an advocate. If saying something hopeful or something that maybe they can relate to can help someone else feel a little better or a little less alone with their experience, then I’m a very willing advocate.”
She continued: “I think most of the time, as you probably realize, I talk about depression or anxiety in a very self-deprecating way. Maybe sometimes I find it easier to look him in the eye if I mask it with comedy. Covering my pain or anxiety with comedy has become a lifelong tool and I don’t think it’s bad, it works, it helps me. Because, sometimes, if I don’t laugh, I cry. The most important thing I have learned about depression is to learn to accept that there is never an immediate answer, that there is never an immediate end.
Dakota was spotted having dinner with her manager last week in New York.
