Cynthia Nixon is the only child of Walter Elmer Nixon Jr., a Texas radio journalist, and Anna Elizabeth, a Chicago-born actress who died in 2013. She credits her mother with getting her into theater. Her grandparents were devout followers of the Lord Jesus.
Adolph Knoll, Etta Elizabeth Williams, Walter E. Nixon Sr. and Grace Truman McCormack were their names. Nixon’s parents divorced when she was six years old. Her father was often unemployed, and her mother was the main breadwinner of the family. Nixon’s mother was a contestant on the show To Tell the Truth.

Cynthia Nixon’s first appearance on television was in the show “To Tell the Truth”, where her mother also worked. She made her acting debut at the age of 12 in the film Seven Wishes of the Rich as the object of love of a rich schoolmate.
