A behind-the-scenes image from the upcoming DC TV series, Gotham Knights, has revealed the first look at Batman’s costume in the new drama. As another TV season gets closer to finishing its run, The CW is already preparing for its next season, with returning and new series. Since 2012, the network has continued to add one DC Comics series after another through the success of the Arrowverse. The 2022-2023 TV season will once again see a new DC property added to the slate in the form of Gotham Knights, another Batman-related show.
From Batwoman writers and producers Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, and Natalie Abrams, Gotham Knights follows the story of Bruce Wayne’s adopted son Turner Hayes (Oscar Morgan), who is framed for Batman’s murder alongside multiple children of the Dark Knight’s foes. While having Batwoman talent attached, The CW drama will not be a spinoff of the canceled DC TV series, nor is it connected to the upcoming Warner Bros. video game of the same name. After having finished production on the pilot, The CW officially handed Gotham Knights a straight-to-series order for the upcoming TV season.
While Gotham Knights revolves around the next generation of heroes, it looks like Batman is being incorporated in one way or another, despite his death. Jonathan Gabay, who is a producer at Berlanti Productions (Greg Berlanti’s production company), recently celebrated the Gotham Knights‘ pilot finishing filming with a series of images posted to Instagram. One of the images he shared was a close look at one of the core pieces of Batman’s iconic costume, the infamous cowl itself, which can be seen below as the ninth slide.

Despite Batman being dead in this continuity, it doesn’t mean that Gotham Knights can’t show the Caped Crusader through flashbacks. While little has been said about the detective’s history within the world of Gotham Knights, it was revealed in a recent set video that Bruce Wayne is making an appearance in some capacity. Whether or not this video showed a stunt double, or someone who will appear regularly in Batman flashbacks, remains to be seen. Regardless, it looks like Gotham Knights is going with a different, but still familiar, Batman design. The hero’s cowl is blue, implying that the series is perhaps introducing the blue version of the suit from the original DC comics, which isn’t often seen in live-action.
It would make sense if Gotham Knights were to tell Batman’s stories through flashbacks, given the twist that the character has been killed. Having flashback scenes featuring this new take on Bruce would also allow the series to establish more of his dynamic with Turner, who is an original creation for the show. Whether Bruce is played by a new actor, or even a known star like Jensen Ackles (who wants to play Batman on Gotham Knights), remains to be seen. More details about Gotham Knights are expected to be revealed this week at The CW’s Upfronts day, which is taking place on Thursday, May 19.
