murder and investigation
On February 24, 2006, Crystal Theobald was driving through Riverside, a California neighborhood, in her boyfriend’s car. His car was run over by a gang in two SUVs, and the gang began shooting at his car as retaliation for the previous attack; Her brother and boyfriend were present in her car. Crystal was shot at point blank range in the head, while her boyfriend was shot in the middle. Two days later, Crystal breathed her last at Riverside Community Hospital. Her boyfriend underwent surgery and survived, and her brother was not hit by the bullet. Later it was found out that no one present in Crystal’s car was associated with any gang. It is unclear whether his murder was a case of mistaken identity. Her mother Belinda Lane’s car was right behind Crystal’s car and she witnessed the incident with her own eyes. Belinda Lane begins to track down her daughter’s killers through MySpace, a now defunct social networking site. Belinda used two fake accounts on MySpace to contact potential suspects, where Jamie (Crystal’s cousin) posed as Crystal so she could help the police learn their location. Talking about it in a documentary, Jamie said,
Pretending to be that, I think that’s ultimately what made it difficult. Loving someone who is dead is not a good feeling inside.”
In 2016, Belinda’s efforts helped the police arrest the suspects.
