Accused of glorifying the practice of Sati
In February 2023, he had created a controversy by talking about Queen Padmavati of Mewar in his speech while presenting the motion of thanks on the President’s address. CP Joshi said,
Queen Padmavati never showed her face to Alauddin Khilji to protect her chastity.
he adds,
She threw herself into the raging fire along with 16,000 of her friends. But your government has created obstacles around this place. Our government has now recognized this site.”
As a result, opposition members accused him of glorifying the practice of Sati in which a widow jumps into the funeral pyre of her dead husband and sets herself on fire. However, Joshi claimed that he had not made any reference to the practice of ‘Sati’ but had mentioned that Padmavati had committed ‘Jauhar’ (self-immolation) to protect her honour. Rejecting the allegations against him, he said that he did not mention ‘Sati’ and due to poor translation from Hindi, the word was mixed with ‘Saatva’.
