CM Ibrahim’s political journey began in 1967 when he was only 12 years old, giving an election speech for his father’s friend, a Congress candidate. Two years after the split of Congress, former Karnataka Chief Minister S. He was noticed by Nijalingappa, who introduced him to another former chief minister, Virendra Patil. Ibrahim remained with Patil till Patil’s death. Ibrahim lost the assembly by-election in Chanarajapet constituency of Bangalore in 1972. In 1975, when Emergency was declared in India, he was one of the first opposition leaders to be arrested under MISA in the state of Karnataka. When the Emergency ended he was released and started working as a campaigner for the Janata Party. In 1977, he contested and lost the Lok Sabha seat from Dharwad South constituency to Congress(I) candidate FH Mohsin.
CM Ibrahim won the Legislative Assembly seat in the 1978 election as a Janata Party candidate. He represented the Shivajinagar constituency of Bengaluru in the Karnataka Assembly. Initially a supporter of Chief Minister R Gundu Rao, he gained confidence and became a minister in the Indian National Congress during the 1980s. However, he later joined the All India Progressive Janata Dal and later the Janata Dal (Secular). He served in various roles in the governments led by Deve Gowda and Gujral in 1996 and 1997, including holding portfolios in civil aviation and tourism as well as information and broadcasting. In 2008, he supported Siddaramaiah and switched to Congress.
CM Ibrahim returned to Congress in 2008 after disagreements with the JD(S) leadership. He was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from 24 August 2017 to 5 August 2022. From 17 April 2022 until his dismissal, he held the position of Karnataka State President for the Janata Dal (Secular). In November 2023, former Indian Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda expelled Ibrahim from the Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) due to ‘anti-party activities’. Even though Ibrahim moved between the Congress and the Janata Party, then back to the Congress and later to the JD(S), by the end of 2023, he did not belong to any party. Reportedly, he was attempting to take control of the Deve Gowda-led party.

Ibrahim’s political activism, opposition to Indira Gandhi and controversy over a gifted watch
Ibrahim was a political figure who gave several speeches against Indira Gandhi during the Emergency. He accused him of being a dictator and urged people to vote for Janata. In the early 1980s, there was a heated discussion in the Karnataka Legislative Council, where AK Subbaiah criticized Ibrahim’s wealth while showing his Rolex watch. Later, Ibrahim claimed that he had received a watch with the falcon logo as a gift from a Saudi prince.
Ibrahim faced legal challenges for alleged hate speeches and riots in 1986
Several cases were registered against CM Ibrahim for giving hate speeches that incited riots in Bengaluru and Tumkur in 1986. These riots were caused by a dispute over the title of an article published in the Deccan Herald on 7 December 1986, which resulted in the unfortunate deaths of 17 people.
In 1997, CM Ibrahim said no to the plan where Tata Group and Singapore Airlines wanted to start an airline in India. He did not want foreign investment in India’s aviation sector for personal reasons. Some accused the Ibrahim-led aviation ministry of being a bad influence and being biased towards private airline Jet Airways. In November 2010, Ratan Tata had said that in the 1990s, a minister had asked him for a bribe of Rs 20 lakh. ₹15 crore (about US$3.3 million) to approve a project with Singapore Airlines. Tata did not pay bribes, and even though Ibrahim was not named directly, some in the media thought he might be the minister mentioned by Tata. Ibrahim said that the allegations are not true.

In the late 2000s, he became less popular due to the alleged rape incident of one of his brothers in Bhadravati, and he did not return to the assembly.
DTH dispute
When CM Ibrahim was the Information and Broadcasting Minister, he had refused Star Television to launch direct-to-home (DTH) service in India. Reportedly, he instead supported Zee Television, going against other ministers, and letting Zee Television run the DTH network.

He was very greedy. Had three years left as MLC (in Congress), but he transferred after not making LOP in Upper House. He thought that if there was a coalition government, he could become a minister, but Congress got full majority.

Facts/General Knowledge
- Reportedly, CM Ibrahim was good at talking to people and this was his strongest point. In the late 1970s, he attracted large crowds at Nehru Park in Seshadripuram, Bengaluru, due to his dark glasses and impressive manner of speaking. Although people did not particularly call him a ‘Muslim leader’, he was still suitable for the role as he could speak different languages like Urdu, Hindi and Kannada.
- Some senior JD(S) leaders mentioned that at one time CM Ibrahim was known as Deve Gowda’s translator. When Deve Gowda became the Prime Minister of India, he was not proficient in Hindi. Ibrahim remained a trusted confidant of the JD(S) chief and also acted as Deve Gowda’s spokesperson.
