Clive James News

The 80-year-old Australian author and broadcaster Clive James, famed for his biting humour, has passed away. The author and critic, who was given a leukaemia diagnosis in 2010, wrote movingly about his terminal disease during his final years.

Vivian James, who relocated to England in 1961 after being born, became well-known for his work as a TV pundit and literary critic. He then provided sarcastic commentary on global television in programmes like Clive James On Television. He introduced humorous and unusual TV clips during the show, most notably from the Japanese game show Endurance.

He passed away on Sunday at his home in Cambridge, according to a statement from his representatives. On Wednesday, a private funeral was held in the Pembroke College chapel. The statement stated that Clive passed away one month after putting down his pen for the final time and nearly ten years after receiving his initial fatal diagnosis.

He patiently and cheerfully endured his numerous sicknesses because he knew, up until the very end, that he had seen more than his fair share of this ‘big, good planet. He expressed his gratitude to the Addenbrooke Hospital personnel for their compassion and care, which unexpectedly allowed him to extra time.

In order for him to pass away peacefully and at home, surrounded by his loved ones and his books, his family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses of the Arthur Rank Hospice at Home team.

One of many who paid tribute to the man she called a “bright, beaming boy” was singer Alison Moyet. He was hailed as “a brilliantly funny man” by ex-tabloid editor Piers Morgan and as “incredibly kind” by broadcaster Gaby Roslin.

Actor Samuel West commented, “We were lucky to have him for so long after his diagnosis.” “We were fortunate to even have him.”Eric Idle, a member of the Monty Python comedy troupe, lamented the passing of “dear Clive James, my friend at Cambridge.”

The Reverend Richard Coles referred to him as “the best television critic that ever lived,” and Margarita Pracatan, a popular Cuban singer who James helped establish, praised him for his “intelligence, talent, and beautiful way of life.”

In addition to honours in the writer’s favourite country, Australia’s High Commissioner to the UK, George Brandis, praised James as “unquestionably the greatest Australian poet of his time.”

Director General of the BBC Tony Hall described the “irreplaceable” James as “a clever, witty and thought-provoking broadcaster.”He had a huge range of talents, and everything he did was essential listening or viewing,” Lord Hall concluded.
