CL Franklin was an American Baptist minister and civil rights activist. CL Franklin is known as the man with the “Million Dollar Voice.”
Early life
CL Franklin was born on January 22, 1915 In Sunflower County, Mississippi, Franklin’s American horoscope is Aquarius. Her father is Willie Walker and her mother is Rachel Franklin.
His father abandoned the family when Clarence was four years old. The following year, his mother married Henry Franklin, whose surname the family adopted. He studied at Jackson College.
Career
Franklin became a preacher at age 16, initially working on the itinerant preaching circuit for blacks before settling at New Salem Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, where he remained until May 1944. Additionally, he moved to the Church pulpit Friendship Baptist in Buffalo, New York. York. There he served until June 1946, when he became pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit.

Selected sermons and the story of his life in his own words are published in a volume edited by Jeff Todd Titon for the University of Illinois Press. Additionally, he was also known for his singing voice and mastery of a traditional musical preaching style in the Black Baptist church called “whooping.”

Additionally, he was a friend and supporter of Martin Luther King Jr. However, he helped lead Dr. King’s freedom march down Woodward Avenue in Detroit in June 1963.

Franklin married his first wife, Alene Gaines, on October 16, 1934. Unfortunately, the marriage had ended in early 1936. He subsequently married Barbara Siggers on June 3, 1936. They had four children: Erma, Cecil , Aretha and Carolyn. Additionally, Barbara had a son from a previous relationship, Vaughn, whom CL adopted shortly after the marriage.

Death
Unfortunately, CL Franklin died on July 27, 1984, at the age of 69, at the New Light Nursing Home in Detroit. He was buried in Detroit’s Woodlawn Cemetery on North Woodward Avenue. Additionally, his friend, the Rev. Jasper Williams Jr., of Salem Bible Church in Atlanta, Georgia, gave the eulogy. Rev. Williams also praised Rev. Franklin’s daughter, Aretha, in 2018.
