Chuck Todd News

Chuck Todd, the longtime host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” informed audiences Sunday that he will be leaving his post. The role will be taken by co-star Kristen Welker, who often appears on Sunday broadcasts.

Welker, who has been with NBC News since 2010, will be Todd’s companion on election nights starting in 2021, according to notes from NBC News editorial president Rebecca Blumenstein and NBC News senior vice president of policy Carrie Budoff Brown.

When Todd took over “Meet the Press,” it was a Sunday show that many questioned whether it would still be relevant in the current media environment, Todd noted of the show. Well, I believe we have more than fully answered that question.

The document states that Todd took over as host in September 2014 and has run it through two presidential election cycles. It’s important, however, that media personalities aren’t “welcome for too long,” as Todd said on the show.

Todd admits: “I’ve been letting my work take me almost 30 years.” Having seen so many friends and family members let work overwhelm them before it was too late, I made a commitment to my family that I wouldn’t do it. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wake up before 5 or 6 am

Todd will continue to work for NBC and will take on a new role as the network’s chief political commentator. According to NBC, he will focus on long-form reporting and continue to host “Chuck Toddcast” and “Meet the Press Reports.”

According to the memo, Todd “will serve as the leading policy voice at NBC News, both on the field and during major events.”

“I’ve had the honor of working with (Welker) from her very first day, and let me just say she was the right person at the right time,” Todd said.

Todd reiterated that it’s political journalists’ job to present the truth, not to build a brand, and says he’s leaving at a time when he’s worried about “this moment in history.”

Todd commented: “You’re doing this job badly if you’re doing it to be famous. “I take partisan attacks as compliments. And when partisans give sincere praise, I take them very seriously. He stressed that Sunday’s main program will “never” accept propagandists.
