Christopher Luxon was also a member of Judith Collins’ shadow cabinet, serving as spokesperson for local government, research, science, production and land information, as well as deputy spokesperson for transport. Career
Christopher Luxon has served on the boards of Virgin Australia and Tourism New Zealand. He spent eighteen years at Unilever, eventually rising to the position of President and CEO of Unilever’s Canadian operations.
Luxon joined Air New Zealand in May 2011 and was appointed CEO on 19 June 2012, succeeding Rob Fyfe who retired at the end of that year. During his eight-year tenure as chief executive, Air New Zealand’s profits reached all-time highs and the company was repeatedly named Australia’s most trusted brand.
Labor unions the Aviation and Marine Engineers Association and E t strongly criticized Luxon and Air New Zealand in 2018 over a pay dispute. The unions planned a three-day strike around Christmas that same year, but the parties negotiated an agreement and the walkout was called off. Luxon announced his resignation from Air New Zealand on 20 June 2019 and hinted at a possible career in the National Party.
While Luxon was CEO of Air New Zealand, his contract business unit Gas Turbines supported the Royal Saudi Navy ships, despite the fact that they were preventing key supplies including water, food and medical aid from Yemen.
Luxon claimed he had “no recollection of it” and that it “may have predated my time”, which his successor Greg Foran disputes. In November 2019, Christopher Luxon won the National Party nomination for the electorate of Botany, traditionally won by the Nationals and considered a safe seat for them. He beat National Party list MP Agnes Loheni, Howick local board chairwoman Katrina Bungard, cancer drug advocate Troy Elliott and computer entrepreneur Jake Bezzant, who was later selected as National’s candidate for Upper Harbour.
Luxon won a seat in the 2020 New Zealand general election by 3,999 votes over Labor candidate Naisa Chen. Luxon praised Martin Luther King Jr. and Kate Sheppard in his inaugural speech as part of a defense of the role of Christians in public life, such as himself, an identity he claimed “seems to have become acceptable to stereotype”.
It was widely assumed that Luxon would become the leader of the National Party, which he denied before his candidacy. Luxon was mentioned as a possible replacement for Judith Collins following her departure as party leader on 25 November 2021. He became leader on 30 November 2021 following the departure of main challenger Simon Bridges.
Political opinions
Christopher Luxon voiced his opposition to the death penalty, abortion, euthanasia and the legalization of recreational cannabis in November 2019. At the same time, he advocated for medical cannabis and a “no jab, no pay” policy to punish welfare recipients who do not vaccinate their children.
Luxon himself is a Christian and has spoken out against liberal ideas like abortion rights and the legalization of cannabis.
