It’s a compelling story about a woman who overcomes every obstacle in her way to discover the answers to her questions about the universe.

Her interest in science started before she started reading while growing up in England. But in the early 1900s, British society didn’t know what to do with such a devoted girl. She was ordered to miss school for a few days before turning 17 because the government could not meet her hungry math and science needs. She had to sit in the front row during a physics lecture at Cambridge University because all women had to sit.

However, she persisted, becoming a pioneer. Payne-Gaposchkin was the first astronomer to be awarded a doctorate. from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1925. She was the first woman at Harvard to be appointed a full professor in 1956, and a few months later became the university’s first female dean.

Soon after starting work at the Harvard University Observatory in 1923, she made remarkable progress. She personally examined the stellar spectral library held by the organization. These are fragments of starlight that reveal the elements in stars based on which there are no wavelengths of light.
