Cause of death revealed for mother who died mysteriously on flight from Dominican Republic

Just over two weeks after a woman died suddenly on a flight from the Dominican Republic, the cause of her death has been revealed.

According ABC News, Stefanie Smith was traveling back to her home in Indiana after a vacation in the Dominican Republic with her boyfriend. However, the mother of two died after suddenly falling ill during her flight on February 28.

The flight was diverted to Turks and Caicos Islands, where Smith was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead. After two weeks of understandable confusion, his family was told that Smith died due to a carotid artery dissection in his neck. He was said to have died of natural causes.

Smith’s brother, Chris Volz, stated that his mid-flight death was truly a tragic medical event. He also noted that the autopsy results do not suggest foul play.

Maria Yannotti, who had been on vacation with Smith, also said ABC News that Smith appeared to be healthy. In particular, he had gone for a run every morning before breakfast during the trip.

Sadly, Smith leaves behind two children. His brother expects his body to be returned to the United States within the next week.

A former flight attendant recently shared what happens if a passenger dies or gets sick mid-flight.

During a recent interview with Mirror, Former flight attendant Lisa Hugh reveals what happens when someone dies mid-flight.

Hugh, working with My Voyage Scotland, told the media outlet that if a passenger died on the flight, the crew would move the body to a more private location than their seat. The crew must maintain the dignity of the deceased passenger as much as possible.

Hugh further noted that the plane will continue to its destination. Once the plane lands, the authorities will take charge of the situation.

Global Rescue Medical Director Dr. Arnold Seid spoke with CN Traveler about current flight protocols. “There is no mandate to alter the flight path in the event of an in-flight death. The pilot must follow certain notification rules, depending on the country and jurisdiction of the destination airport, as well as the company’s protocol.

Hugh also revealed what happens when a passenger falls ill during the flight. “When a passenger falls ill during a flight, the crew immediately assesses the situation. We are trained in basic first aid and have emergency medical kits on board. The first step is to ask if there are any medical professionals on the flight willing to help.”

“We also contacted the cabin to inform the captain of the situation. Depending on the severity, the crew may administer basic care, such as providing oxygen, medications or other first aid measures.”
