Buddha Purnima 2023: Buddha’s Songs and Sayings
1. Perception
Awareness is the way to immortality; recklessness is the way to death. The perceivers do not die. People who don’t think as if they’re dead.
The wise understand this, delight in awareness, and find joy in the knowledge of the sage. Those who are wise, meditative, persistent, always making strong efforts, attain Nirvana, the highest peace and happiness.
If a person is alert, conscious, attentive, clean, attentive, self-restraint and lives up to duty, one’s reputation will increase. Through awareness, awareness, restraint, and control, the wise can create for themselves an island that no flood can overwhelm.
Fools run after vanity, are ignorant and careless. The wise man protects perception as his best treasure. Do not pursue vanity after satisfying senses or desires.
Anyone who meditates with awareness finds great joy. When the wise overcome thoughtlessness with awareness, climb to the heights of the ladder of wisdom, free from the defilements of looking at the sad crowd below them, they stare at the fools, like a someone on the top of the mountain staring at the people standing in the plain.
Conscious among the heartless, awake among the sleepers, the wise advance, like a racehorse leaving the slow. Through awareness, Indra rose to be the leader of the gods. People praise awareness; recklessness is always to blame.
The beggar finds joy in awareness, dreads thoughtlessness, moves like fire that burns all limits, small or large. The beggar finds joy in awareness, is afraid to look without thought, cannot fall, but is close to nirvana.
2. Anger
Let go of anger; give up pride; overcome all worldly ties. There is no suffering that touches a person who is not attached to nama and rupa, who does not take anything as his own. Whoever controls anger like a lost chariot, I call him a true driver; others just hold the reins.
Conquer anger with love; conquer evil with good; conquer the miser with generosity, and the liar with the truth. Tell the truth; don’t get angry; for even being asked a little. These three steps lead you to the gods.
The wise do not harm anyone, always master their own body, go to the unchanging place, wherever they go, there is no more suffering. Those who are always awake, study day and night, towards Nirvana, their passion will cease.
Here is an old adage, Atula, not only today: ‘They blame the silent; blame the talkative; they also blame people of moderation; there is no one in the world who is not guilty.’Never, never will be, and now there is no person who is always accused or who is always praised.
As for the one whom the racists praise day after day as spotless, wise, rich in wisdom and virtue, who dares reproach him, who is like a gold coin from the Jambu River? He is praised even by the gods, even by Brahma.
Be aware of your body’s anger and take control of your body. Let go of the faults of your body and practice virtue with your body.
Be aware of tongue anger and control your tongue. Let go of the injustices of your tongue and practice virtue with your tongue.
Be aware of the anger of your mind and take control of your mind. Let go of the faults of the mind and practice virtue with your mind.
The wise control the body, the tongue, the wise control their mind, those are the people who are really good at controlling.
