Early life

Career
Bryan Stevenson moved to Atlanta after graduating from Harvard University in 1985. After moving to Atlanta, he joined the full-time legal team at the Southern Center for Human Rights. During this time, he defended Warren McClesky, sentenced to death in 1987.
He served as executive director of the Alabama Capital Representation Resource Center from 1989 to 1995. During this time, he represented convicts sentenced to death in a congressionally funded organization.
The government subsequently decided to reduce funding for the South Center in 1994. It then decided to work independently to fight for the rights of discriminated groups and prisoners in 1994.

In 1995, he founded the nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) and served as the organization’s executive director. Additionally, he attempted to make the criminal justice system more fair and free of bias through his organization.
He successfully reversed and reduced death sentences within a year while working with his organization. Furthermore, he also helped Russian lawmakers overturn around 800 death sentences during the Yeltsin era.
In addition to that, he also worked with several law firms in Eastern Europe and also with lawyers in the Caribbean. He joined the clinical faculty at New York University School of Law in 1989. He currently serves as a professor of law at the school. In 2014, he published his memoir “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption.”
