Bridget Rooney News

Nine members of a travelling family who kept employees in filthy circumstances in trailers were sentenced to prison for crimes related to modern-day slavery.

One victim had to dig his own grave after enduring more than 25 years of suffering. Martin Rooney Senior, the family’s patriarch, received a 10-year sentence in prison, while each of his two sons received a sentence of over 15 years. The travelling family’s “chilling in their mercilessness” was how one author described them.

One of the biggest investigations of its sort, Operation Pottery by Lincolnshire Police, included the case at Nottingham Crown Court.

At the Drinsey Nook location in Lincolnshire, the Rooneys’ victims were beaten and denied access to running water or restrooms. Martin Rooney Senior’s sentencing judge, Timothy Spencer QC, stated: “You raised your sons in a criminal culture.”

The judge also contrasted the victims’ miserable circumstances with the wealthy way of life the family led. He explained to him that it was comparable to the gap between mediaeval royalty and peasants.

The victims will never get the years that were taken from them back, but Ch Supt Chris Davison of the Lincolnshire Police said: “I hope this gives them some comfort that justice has been served and shows that we will do everything in our power to try and stop others suffering in the ways that they did.” Mr. Davison stated that the force “would not rest on this result” since there may be further victims of modern slavery in the UK.

We are looking into five ongoing investigations, and we’ll keep putting any victims at the centre of our inquiries, he continued. Seven warrants were executed in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire in September 2014, which prompted police to launch operations against members of the Rooney family.

Numerous victims were discovered, and the UK Human Trafficking Centre came to the conclusion that 18 men had been brought illegally to the sites.

All of the victims, who ranged in age from 18 to 63 and were frequently homeless, were characterised as weak individuals who had been picked up by the defendants from all over the UK.
