Brian Shaw, who played basketball throughout college, became interested in weightlifting. He began his strongman career by participating in a strongman competition held in Denver in October 2005.

He won the title even though he had no official training, this awakened the strong man in him and he jumped to the professional ranks in June 2006.

In the year 2009, he participated in the Strongest Man on Earth, also known as ‘Fortissimus’ competition, which was held in Canada. He came in third place and surprised spectators by being the only man to lift six Atlas stones weighing between 136 and 193 kg each.

Shaw himself won the classic and lost the prize money along with the rest of the athletes.
