Boney Kapoor is a 69-years-old (born on 11 November 1955) Bollywood Film producer. He was born as Achal Kapoor to a Punjabi family of filmmakers, who migrated to India from Peshawar, Pakistan. His family initially stayed at Raj Kapoor’s car garage when they landed in Mumbai. In those struggling days, his family even lived at the ‘chawl’ area of Mumbai.
He inherited the production skills from his father, who himself was a renowned film producer. Though his brothers – Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor became actors, he carries forward the legacy of his father by choosing to become a producer.
Family, Caste & Wife
Boney Kapoor hails from a Punjabi-Khatri family with roots in Pakistan. His father, Late Surinder Kapoor, was a renowned producer and his mother, Nirmal Kapoor was a homemaker.
He has 3 younger brothers – Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, and a younger sister, Reena Kapoor.
He had his first marriage with TV Producer, Mona Kapoor in 1983. Everything went well till Sridevi started staying at Boney’s house and used to consider Boney as her brother.
But destiny had some other plans, as with time Boney and Sridevi came closer and she was got pregnant with Boney’s child.
This was an obvious shocker for Mona, whose marriage broke down after it. In 1996, Boney married Sridevi after leaving his first wife, Mona and kids, Arjun and Anshula.
The couple had 2 daughters, Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor.
His married life derailed on 24 February 2018, when Sridevi passed away in Dubai after suffering a massive cardiac arrest.
Career
Like his father, he always wanted to become a producer and started his career as an assistant editor in the 1970s. Later, he started working as an assistant director under Shakti Samanta. His first production, Hum Paanch (1980) was a multi-lingual remake, which later became a trendsetter in Bollywood.
He reached the heights of his production career with his sci-fi film Mr. India starring his brother Anil Kapoor and his future wife Sridevi. The film became a cult classic in India cinema for various reasons, such as – Sridevi’s song “Hawa Hawaii”, Amrish Puri’s one-liner “Mogambo khush hua” (Mogambo is pleased), and the concept of an invisible man.
Some of the biggest hits include – Mr. India, Judaai, Pukar, Company, No Entry, and Wanted.
Controversy
On 8 April 2023, at the check post near Hebbalu toll in Karnataka’s Davangere, the Election Commission of India (ECI) seized 66 kg silverware worth Rs 39 lakhs allegedly belonging to Boney Kapoor. A BMW car registered to Bayview Projects Pvt Ltd, owned by Boney Kapoor, was reported to be transporting the silverware from Chennai to Mumbai without proper documents.

- Both his wives died before the release of their child’s debut Bollywood film, i.e. Arjun Kapoor’s Ishqzaade (2012), and Jhanvi Kapoor’s Dhadak (2018).
- He was a member of the board of directors of the Asian Academy of Film & TV (AAFT).
- He was also a member of the governing council of AAFT film city, Noida that conducts various short and long-term film courses.
- Despite being such a renowned producer, he was in debt in the early 2000s, as none of his films were clicking at the box-office. In 2005, Anil Kapoor-Salman Khan starrer No Entry (2005) came to rescue his sinking career as it proved to be a huge hit.
