Moore announced his candidacy in February 2020 for Utah’s 1st Congressional District. In a field of 12 top contenders, Moore and Weber County Commissioner Kerry Gibson made it out of the Republican nominating convention in second place. Davis County Commissioner Bob Stevenson and Kaysville Mayor Katie Witt were two additional candidates who garnered enough signatures to enter the primary.
Moore received criticism during the party’s nomination process because he did not reside in the designated congressional district. He lived 15 miles outside of the district, on the eastern shore of Salt Lake City. Candidates for Congress only need to reside in the same state, not necessarily in the district they would represent. Moore then prevailed in the four-way Republican primary on June 30 with just over 30% of the vote.
In addition, Moore defeated Darren Parry, the Democratic nominee, in the general election with 69.5% of the vote to Parry’s 30.4%. On January 3, 2021, he took office, maintaining Republican control of the district since 1980 and marking the first time an incumbent has not run in 18 years. Tenure
Moore voted against Donald Trump’s second impeachment attempt. Moore participated in a bipartisan vote on May 19, 2021 to create the commission to investigate the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol. Legislation to create this commission was defeated by the Senate. On January 13, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy advocated for the creation of such a commission, saying: “[he thought] a commission of inquiry… would be prudent.” The current United States House Select Committee on the January 6 attack received Moore’s opposition vote.
Moore was one of the few House Republicans to vote both times to keep Liz Cheney as conference chair.
