Bill Maher is making a big decision amid the WGA strike and choosing to return to his late night talk show. Real Time with Bill Maher – no writers.
The 67-year-old made his statement on social media, revealing his reasons.

“Real time is coming back, unfortunately, without writers or writing,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He continued: “It’s been five months and it’s time to get people back to work. Writers have important issues that I sympathize with and hope are addressed satisfactorily, but they are not the only people with issues, problems, and concerns. Despite some help from me, many of the staff are struggling mightily. “We were all hoping this would be over after Labor Day, but that day passed and it looks like nothing is happening yet.”
“I love my writers, I’m one of them, but I’m not prepared to waste an entire year and see so many low-income people suffer so much,” Bill admitted.
He also stated that he would “honor the spirit of the strike by not doing a monologue, a desk piece, New Rules, or an editorial, the writing pieces that I am so proud of at Real Time.”
“I will be doing [this] without my writers [and it] “It’s not going to be as good as our normal show, period,” Bill says. “But the heart of the show is an impromptu panel discussion that aims to cut through the bullshit and predictable partisanship, and that will continue. The show will not disappoint.”
Bill’s decision and statement come just after Drew Barrymore drew criticism for her own return to the daytime talk space.
