Barry Humphries, also known as Dame Edna Everage, dies aged 89

Barry Humphries sadly passed away.

The Australian, best known for her drag character Dame Edna Everage, died at the age of 89 on Saturday (April 22) following complications from hip surgery.

“He was completely himself until the end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit, and his generosity of spirit,” Barry’s family shared in a statement with The Hollywood Reporter.

“With more than 70 years on stage, he was an artist through and through, touring until the last year of his life and planning more shows that sadly will never happen,” his family added.

Barry created her character of Dame Edna in 1955 and became a huge success in the 1970s when she took her performance to London’s West End before acting as a presenter for several productions, television shows and talk shows.

Dame Edna was best known for her lilac hair, diamond-encrusted cat glasses and phrases such as “Hello possums!”

Barry’s career spanned more than 60 years and he has received several awards. In 1982, Barry was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (OA) for his services to theater and in 2007, the late Queen Elizabeth appointed him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his contribution to the arts.

In 2000, Barry won a special Tony Award for his Broadway show. Dame Edna, The Royal Tour.

Barry is survived by his wife, Lizzie Spender, and four children.
