Variety reports that although Warner Bros. submitted the film as an original screenplay and the Writers Guild of America deemed it an original work, the Oscar committee decided to put the film in the adapted screenplay category.
This also happened with the recent Best Picture winner. Moonlight, which was based on a play that was never published. The Academy changed the script from Original to Adapted, although it still won the award.
The new favorites in the original screenplay category for the next show are now The remains, Past Lives, May Decemberand Anatomy of a fall.
