When he was twelve years old, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. During his graduation, he was part of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and worked as the city president and state executive member of the organization. He was also the city secretary of the organization, city president, national secretary of Kerala and in-charge of Tamil Nadu. In 1994, he started working as the director of Karimnagar Co-operative Urban Bank and worked there till 2003.
Politics
During the 1996 elections, he helped BJP leader LK Advani campaign for 35 days for the Surat Rath Yatra. From 2005 to 2019, he was the municipal councilor of Karimnagar. In 2014, he contested the state assembly elections as a BJP candidate, but was unable to win the seat. In 2018, he contested the state assembly elections as a BJP candidate, but could not win a single seat. On 23 May 2019, he was elected as a Lok Sabha member from Karimnagar constituency. On 11 March 2020, he was elected as the President of Bharatiya Janata Party, Telangana.

Allegation of leaking SSC paper
On 6 April 2023, he was sent to judicial custody till 19 April in the SSC paper leak case. Protests broke out demanding his release after he was detained by the police. Some of his party workers even said that the police did not give a clear reason for detaining him. His party workers gathered around the police station and raised slogans against Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao. Some of them also claimed that it was a conspiracy by the Telangana government to divert people’s attention from the failures of the BRS party with regard to school and job examinations. The police statement said that the main culprit in this case is a person named Shiv Ganesh who had shared the paper on WhatsApp. Later, journalist Boora Prashant, who received the paper on WhatsApp, shared the news about the paper leak with various media outlets. According to BJP, Chief Minister KCR and BRS party tried to link the journalist with BJP, but on the night of 6 April 2023, Hanamkonda court of Warangal district granted bail to Sanjay.
Judicial remand against Sanjay
In January 2022, he and over 150 BJP members were booked for allegedly violating Covid-19 norms and attacking a public servant during a ‘Jagran’ protest (a night vigil) for teachers and other government employees. Was taken into judicial custody for the day. The protest was against the government’s GO3317 rule which called for a regional system in the allocation and transfer of jobs. His arrest was criticized by many leaders including National President JP Nadda and Union Minister G Kishan Reddy. Sanjay has been booked for violating provisions of the Disaster Management Act, Indian Penal Code section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) and IPC section 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from his duty). Facts/General Knowledge
- His victory in 2019 was a shock to many as he was not politically stable compared to his opponents. He became one of the four Bharatiya Janata Party MPs from Telangana.
- In 2020, he criticized the film RRR and also threatened SS Rajamouli that his party workers would burn the theaters that would telecast the film. He opposed the character of Komaram Bheem, who was shown wearing Muslim attire in the film. Rajamouli later said that the picture was based on the characters of Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju but it was not a biopic. However, when the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from the film RRR won the Oscar award in 2023, he took to Twitter to congratulate the makers of the film.
- In November 2022, he was denied permission for the fifth phase of his ‘Praja Sangram Yatra’ and a public meeting in Bhainsa town of Nirmal district, after which he filed a petition in the High Court. The police officers who stopped them said that the situation in the area was communally sensitive and hence they were stopped. The police also deployed some policemen near his house in Karimnagar to ensure that he did not go on the trip. He took to Twitter to talk about the matter and said that he will go to court regarding the matter.
- In January 2023, his elder son Bhagirath was accused of attacking a student at his university. He was later released on bail.
