Balwinder Safary (1978–2022) was an Indian singer, based in Canada. He was popular for singing various Punjabi songs like “O Chain Mere Makhna” (1998), “Tere Ishke Ne” (1999), and “Rahe Rahe Jaan Waliye” (2010). He died on 26 July 2022 after recovering from a coma.

Balwinder Safaree aka Balwinder Singh was born on Monday, 15 December 1958 (age 63 years at the time of death) in Kapurthala, Punjab, India. Their zodiac sign is Sagittarius. His interest in music developed after listening to Gurbani and Shabad Kirtan sung by his father in various Gurudwaras in his childhood. When he was studying in school, Safri used to sing patriotic songs in school competitions and morning assemblies. Later he took training in Indian classical music from his guru Jaswant Bhavra. He then obtained a degree in Music from Randhir College, Kapurthala, Punjab, India.

livelihood
In 1980, he moved to Canada from Punjab, India and joined a garment manufacturing company as a tailor. He used to work on weekdays, and on weekends he used to perform with various music groups like ‘Azad Group’ and ‘Ashoka Group’.
In 1985, she gave her first performance on TV and sang the Punjabi song “Jad Lagiya Chhota Ishqiya Diya”. In 1990, he formed a music group named ‘Safari Boys’ with five other members. He starred in films like ‘Kar Shukar Khuda Da’ (1994), ‘Another Level’ (1999), ‘Inferno’ (2000), ‘Get Real’ (2010), and ‘Jadon Man Dole Tera’ (2014), which gained immense popularity. . In 1995, Balwinder released his first music album ‘Safari Bomb The Tumbi Remix’ (1995). Some of her other popular Punjabi music albums are “Do Tikhiyaan Talwaran” (1997), “Tera Bhana” (2000), “Paao Bhangra” (2009), and “Mere Dil Te Alana Paya” (2010).
Death
In 2022, following a cardiac arrest, he underwent triple bypass surgery at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, England. After the surgery, various complications were detected in his body due to which his brain got damaged and he went into coma. After being in a coma for 86 days, his body started reacting to certain things, but he could not recover and he died on 26 July 2022.
On his demise, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh took to Twitter to share his grief. He tweeted,
Sad to know about the demise of Punjabi music legend Balwinder Safaree today. My heartfelt condolences are with his family and millions of Punjabi fans around the world.
Facts/General Knowledge
- In 2019, he was honored with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by Brit Asia TV.
- During an interview he explained how he got the name Safaree, saying,
I was a notorious kid in school and had no interest in studies. One of my teachers used to taunt me by saying, ‘You are always on a journey, come again as a big safari.’ Since then my teachers used to call me Safari Safari. When I pursued a career in singing, I included it in my name.
