Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, costume designer Trish Summerville revealed that Lucy’s rainbow dress featured a callback to one of Katniss’s outfits.
“We made the corset to mimic the shape of Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss’s blue mockingjay dress,” she explained. The dress in question is the one Jennifer wore in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire before being sent to the Games for the second time. Her stylist Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) helped her transform her wedding dress into a statement dress fit to start a revolution. It was modeled after a mockingjay.
Trish explained that they had some issues with the costume: “I was ordering all these different colors of excess tulle. So if there were eight or 10 colors in the skirt, she would sort through all that tulle, gather it, and play with the skirt to figure out which colors went well together. Then once we cast, we discovered that Rachel Zegler is quite petite, so we had to scale everything down, reconfigure all the measurements, and figure out how many rows of color we should have.”
Despite that, it ended up being one of her favorite looks.
“There’s a lot of detail in the book about what it is, and I had to go through a lot of iterations of what I wanted it to be. It took me a while, but one day it occurred to me. And we also have a great patina team working on it,” she recalled.
Speaking of callbacks to the original series, Rachel recently released a cover of Jennifer’s song “The Hang Tree.”
