Wild Magic is one of the most chaotic subclasses in Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition, and its introduction to Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to implement game-changing effects and powers. With the launch of the Sorcerer class in Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 6, players can experience new spells, strategies, and loadouts. Both Wild Magic and Draconic Blood are available as Sorcerer player subclasses, though the former introduces far more unpredictability than the latter to BG3’s gameplay.
Wild Magic in Dungeons and Dragons harnesses the power of chaos to unleash devastating attacks but at an unforeseen cost. One of the most well-known instances of Wild Magic backfiring appeared in Critical Role, a popular Dungeons and Dragons livestream, where the party’s Wizard unintentionally turned himself into a sheep in the heat of battle. Naturally, this consequence caused significant problems that could have proved deadly. Similar results could turn a Baldur’s Gate 3 encounter from a surefire win to a devastating defeat, meaning players should use their abilities cautiously while exploring the hostile landscape.
The Wild Magic subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3 grants players several valuable skills both in and out of combat. By utilizing the Wild Magic subclass, players gain an advantage on attack rolls via the Tides of Chaos ability once per long or short rest, meaning the dice roll twice to give players a chance at a higher score. Wild Magic also provides an advantage to Ability Checks, which can occur in the overworld and during conversations. These checks grant player characters the ability to access information or unlock different dialogue progressions. It can also gain an advantage for Saving Throws, which has the potential to save a player’s (or companion’s) life, depending on the situation.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s Wild Magic Comes At A Price
Unfortunately, the powers of Wild Magic are too good to be true and often come at a price. In a traditional tabletop Dungeons & Dragons game, players utilizing Wild Magic skills roll a d100 to determine what unforeseen effect befalls their character and party. This effect has translated nicely into Baldur’s Gate 3’s gameplay, triggering a random event that ranges from setting surroundings on fire to summoning a raging, hostile demon. Thankfully, some random events can work in the caster’s favor, such as gaining a bonus action with teleport.
Though Larian Studios has been consistent with the implementation of Dungeons and Dragon lore, it’s unknown just how many different effects accompany Wild Magic. It’s unlikely the entire chart from D&D 5e was ported into the game, especially as Larian has yet to implement many mechanics of both the tabletop RPG and video game into the early access version. Various interviews (such as those collected by Stealth Optional) with Baldur’s Gate 3 developers confirm the game’s 2021 updates are ongoing, with more hotfixes, patches, and content being added to finish the product.
Players eager to harness the power of chaos and test their luck with Baldur’s Gate 3’s new mechanic can download Patch 6 now. Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available as an early access product, with the final project anticipated to be completed at some point in 2022. Patch 6 introduces the Sorcerer class alongside the Grymforge region and numerous fixes and updates to combat, weapons, spells, abilities, and other existing content.
