Babu Gogineni was born as Rajaji Ramanadha Babu Gogineni on 14 April 1968 (age 50) in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. He was brought up in a liberal environment and has been an atheist since childhood.
His first name “Rajaji” was derived from his biggest source of inspiration, C. Rajagopalachari, who was not only the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu but also the first and last Indian Governor General of India after Lord Mountbatten left India in 1948.
Such was his interest in learning foreign languages that when he reached the age of 17, after completing his diploma course with the Alliance Française, he became the youngest certified French language teacher in India. In 1987, he got his first introduction to the humanitarian movement on the occasion of the birth centenary of Indian revolutionary MN Roy in Dehradun on 21 March.
He taught French language for about 11 years and even worked in administrative positions for various events organized in India. During this period, he also went on a trip to Europe, where he discovered many things related to humanism and its contribution to nation building. In the 1990s, he was part of various rationalist organizations in Hyderabad and Mumbai. In 1997, he went to the United Kingdom, where he worked with the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) as executive director. After returning to Hyderabad, he transformed himself into a science popularizer, humanist, rationalist and human rights activist, taking inspiration from Carl Sagan, America’s most famous scientific visionary.
