News about Austin Harrouff

A judge ruled Monday that alleged killer Austin Harrouff was not responsible for the 2016 murder of a Tequesta couple at their home on Southeast Kokomo Road in south Martin County for reasons dementia.

John Stevens III, 59, and Michelle Mishcon, 53, were stabbed to death by Harrouff, 25, in a brutal and random attack that also injured their neighbor Jeffrey Fisher, who tried to help help the couple.

Harrouff was a 19-year-old student at Florida State University at the time. When Stevens’ face was discovered bitten and chewed in his driveway, authorities discovered something resembling flesh in Harrouff’s teeth. Harrouff allegedly targeted Stevens III and Mishcon while on his way to his father’s home in the neighborhood, according to deputies.

According to the records, Stevens III and Mishcon’s degree of multiple trauma left them on the verge of death, according to the medical examiner who performed their autopsy. Investigators found that considerable force was required to restrain Harrouff, including the use of Tasers, police dogs, and numerous law enforcement officers.

At the start of the trial, his defense team made it clear that they would seek to acquit the madman. For that to happen, Harrouff must convince the judge that he couldn’t understand the consequences of his actions, that he didn’t know what he was doing at the time of the murder, or that he didn’t know that that is wrong.

Two psychologists, one working for the government and the other working for the defense, determined that Harrouff was going through an “acute psychotic episode” when the murder was committed.

According to doctors, Harrouff “couldn’t know right from wrong,” meaning he met Florida’s requirements to be released from mental illness. Before making her decision, District Judge Sherwood Bauer listened to nearly two hours of comments from relatives of Stevens and Mishcon, some of whom were furious and devastated. They often spoke directly to Harrouff as he sat motionless in front of three defenders.

Cindy Mishcon, Michelle Mishcon’s sister, began by reading aloud the numerous messages Harrouff had written to college friends and a girlfriend in the months leading up to the murder. He often mentioned how he was so drunk that he passed out and that he took drugs almost every day.

She seems annoyed reading more texts, raising her voice occasionally when talking to Harrouff. She also detailed the contents of numerous taped phone calls Harrouff made to family members while in prison, in which she claimed that he appeared to detest Stevens III and Mishcon and downplaying his involvement in the murders.
