Gehlot was born on 3 May 1951 (age: 72, as of 2023) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Since childhood, he was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and has practiced the Gandhian way of life. He completed his B.Sc. Completed. in 1971, MA in 1973 and LLB degree in 1976 from Jodhpur University. Earlier, Gehlot was very interested in becoming a doctor and to fulfill his dream, he had even taken admission in medical college but later left it. At the time of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 (or the East Bengali refugee crisis), Gehlot volunteered there. He served in refugee camps in eastern Indian states. At that time, he was noticed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during one of her visits to refugee camps.

In the 10th and 11th Lok Sabha, he was made a member of the Standing Committee of Railways. In December 1994, he was again appointed President of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee. In 1997, he became the President of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee for the third time.
In 1998, he became the Chief Minister of Rajasthan for the first time, representing the Sardarpura constituency of Jodhpur, Rajasthan. In 2008, Gehlot again became the Chief Minister of Rajasthan for the second time. In 2018, Ashok Gehlot was elected as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan for the third time.
