In 2013, Arun along with his brother Anurag Thakur was accused of fraud and conspiracy in a land case. In the FIR against Arun and Anurag, it was said that they had made fake documents by paying money to the officials to buy land from a Dalit man named Premu. During enquiry, it was revealed that this land could not be sold before 20 years, but when Arun and Anurag bought it from the owner, their ownership rights on it were only fifteen years. Talking about this in an interview, both the brothers said,
This is political vendetta to defame me and HPCA and tarnish my image. If Virbhadra Singh feels that he (Congress) can win the Lok Sabha elections by filing two more FIRs, then he can do so. We will fight the case and prove our position right.”
