Arun Sau started his active political career in 1990 as a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In 1996, Arun Sau joined the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, he was also its general secretary. District President and then MLA Amar Aggarwal with Yuva Morcha. In 2000, he became the state president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. Sao also worked with the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for a long time. In 2019 he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time.

In 2019, Arun Sau contested the 2019 Indian general election from Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh and defeated Congress candidate Atal Srivastava by 1,41,763 votes. In August 2022, Arun Sao became the President of Chhattisgarh BJP in place of Vishnudev Sai. In the 2023 state elections, Sao defeated Congress leader Thaneshwar Sahu from Lormi seat by 45,891 votes and became the member of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on 3 December 2023. On 13 December 2023, Arun Sao was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh.
