Arif Alvi was born on 29 July 1949 (age 69 years; as in 2018) in Karachi, Pakistan. Different sources give diverse information about his date of birth. Some say it is 29 August 1949, while others say 1947, while their documents say 29 July 1949. After his father’s migration to Karachi, he was enrolled in Karachi Grammar School, but was later expelled. After his early education, he moved to Lahore in 1967 to pursue dentistry. Alvi graduated from D’Montmorency College of Dentistry and received a master’s degree in prosthodontics from the University of Michigan in 1975. He received a master’s degree in orthodontics from the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, California. Subsequently, he established Alvi Dental Hospital in Pakistan.

Family
Alvi is Pakistani by religion and nationality. His father, Habib-ur-Rahman Ilahi Alvi, was a dentist in India. Alvi’s father moved to Pakistan after partition and before that he was the dentist to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Alvi has two siblings; One brother and one sister. Alvi is survived by his wife, Samina Alvi, and four children – 3 daughters – Naima Alvi Bawni, Marhama Alvi Shah and Radhiya Alvi Sumar; And a son.

professional career
Alvi was the President of the 1st Pakistan International Dental Conference in 1981 and the 3rd Pakistan International Dental Conference in 1987. Later in 1997, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Before standing in the presidential election, he had prepared the constitution of Pakistan Dental Association.

political career
His political career was quite eventful. He started as a polling agent and soon formed an alliance with a religious party. Alvi has been interested in politics since his undergraduate degree, when he formed an alliance with Islami Jamiat Talaba. In 1979, Alvi lost his seat from the Provincial Assembly of Sindh. After that, he left the political party, JI and soon joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in 1996. Ultimately he became the Chairman of PTI Sindh Chapter. In 2001, he was also elected as the Vice Chairman of PTI. Alvi lost the elections for the Provincial Assembly of Sindh twice in the Pakistani general elections; In 1997 and 2002. He served as the General Secretary of PTI from 2006–2013. Recently, in 2018, he was re-elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan as a PTI candidate. Now he has also been elected as the 13th President of Pakistan in September 2018.
