According to a Chicago Tribune article from July 7, 1996, Ari and Bob Brinkman co-owned Artifactural Furniture in Barrington, which fashioned furniture out of salvaged, 19th-century architectural artifacts.

While working as cabinetmakers for upscale restaurants and theaters in the Chicago region, the two became friends. They were each bringing remnants from their respective woodworking projects home, combining the lumber scraps with architectural other items, and creating furniture for friends. They united their tool and accessory collections in 1994 and rented a 2,000 square foot storefront in Barrington.
