Aparna Sen is an Indian director, screenwriter and actor who predominantly works in the Bengali film industry. He has won nine National Film Awards and nine International Film Festival Awards for his acting and filmmaking skills. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1987.

Aparna Sen was born as Aparna Dasgupta on Thursday, 25 October 1945 (age 77 years; as of 2022) in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She did her schooling from South Point School, Kolkata and Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata. Aparna’s childhood was spent in Kolkata and Hazaribagh (Jharkhand). He studied Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Presidency College, Kolkata.

Aparna Sen belongs to a Baidya family of Bengal.

His father, Chidananda Dasgupta, was a veteran critic, film producer and one of the founders of the Calcutta Film Society along with Satyajit Ray in 1947. His father died on 22 May 2011 at the age of 89. In 1944, he married Supriya. Dasgupta, who was a costume designer. In 1995, when Supriya Dasgupta was 73, she earned the National Film Award for Best Costume Design for her husband’s directorial debut ‘Amodini’.

From 1986 to 2005, Aparna was associated with the Bengali women’s magazine ‘Sanand’ as an editor. He worked as Creative Director at Kolkata TV, a Bengali 24×7 infotainment channel, for a year. In 2011, she became editor of Paroma magazine. The company closed down after the financial scam of Saradha Group. In 2013, Aparna and the editorial team of Paroma Magazine launched a new magazine ‘Prothoma Akhon’.

Saradha Group Financial Scam 2013

In 2013, when the Saradha Group financial scam occurred, Patrika Paroma was one of the 200 private companies that incurred losses and closed down. Reportedly, Paroma magazine editor Aparna Sen was questioned by ED officials for more than five hours, during which she was asked questions regarding her financial transactions. The Enforcement Directorate accused Aparna of receiving Rs 75 lakh as remuneration from Saradha. Paroma finally closed on 14 April 2013.

FIR by Kalyan Chabey

In September 2022, BJP North Kolkata district president Kalyan Choubey had filed an FIR against Aparna Sen for making statements like calling BSF personnel ‘rapists’ and ‘killers’, claiming that the army was given more power than it Is as much as he should get.

On 23 July 2019, around 49 celebrities from across India wrote a letter to PM Narendra Modi expressing their concern about intolerance in the country. The letter claimed that the slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ have become a war cry, thereby creating communal tension in the society. He captured Aparna Sen, then 14, on the terrace of her house with her eyes closed, enjoying the rain on her face. The water was coming from the garden hose.
