Anurag Thakur is an Indian politician from Himachal Pradesh. He is from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is known for serving as the junior Finance Minister and Corporate Affairs Minister in the Narendra Modi government.

Anurag Thakur was born on 24 October 1974 (age 48 years; as in 2020) in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. Their zodiac sign is Scorpio. He did his schooling from Dayanand Model School in Jalandhar, Punjab. In 1994, he pursued Bachelor of Arts from Doaba College, Jalandhar. He has always been interested in sports, especially cricket. He used to participate in college level cricket matches. Due to this, he got selected in the state team of Himachal Pradesh. In the year 2000, he became the President of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA). He played a Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2000. As HPCA President, he appointed himself as the selector of the Ranji Trophy cricket team; To become a selector, it is mandatory for selectors to play first-class cricket matches.
He joined politics and was elected MP in 2008. Thakur is a 4-time MP from Hamirpur constituency of Himachal Pradesh. He became the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on 22 May 2016. However, after a controversy, on January 2, 2017, the Supreme Court removed him from the post of BCCI President.

Anurag Thakur belongs to a Rajput family. His father, Prem Kumar Dhumal, was a politician and twice Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh from 1998 to 2002 and 2008 to 2013. His mother Sheela Devi is a housewife. His brother Arun Singh Thakur is a businessman.
Anurag Thakur is married to Shefali Thakur. He has two sons Jayaditya Thakur and Udayveer Thakur.

Anurag Thakur entered politics in 2008 when his father Prem Kumar Dhumal, an MP, was elected as the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Anurag contested the by-election from Hamirpur constituency and was elected MP. In the 2009 general elections, he contested from Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency and won. In 2011, he was appointed President of All India Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He was one of the youngest MPs, and won the “Best Young Parliamentarian Award” in 2011. He won the Sansad Ratna Award in 2019 for his distinguished performance as an MP.
He won from Hamirpur constituency consecutively in 2014 and 2019 general elections. On 18 July 2018, he was appointed Chief Whip of the BJP for the 2019 Lok Sabha election. On 30 May 2019, Anurag Thakur was sworn in as the Union Minister of State (MoS) in the Narendra Modi government by President Ram Nath Kovind. On 31 May 2019, he was given the charge of Junior Finance Minister and Corporate Affairs Minister. On 7 July 2021, he was promoted as a cabinet minister in the reshuffle of Narendra Modi’s council of ministers.

bcci president controversy
The Supreme Court of India dismissed Anurag Thakur from the post of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Supreme Court had appointed the Lodha Committee to determine and give a detailed report on whether government officials should be included in the administrative bodies of the Games. The Lodha Committee, after submitting its final report, advised the courts that politicians should not be part of sports administration. Subsequently, the Supreme Court dismissed Anurag in January 2017 and asked him to step down from the post of BCCI President. However, Thakur refused to accept the decision. After several hearings and arguments, the court ordered Thakur to either step down, tender an unconditional public apology to the Supreme Court, or he would be arrested. After this order, Anurag apologized unconditionally and resigned from the post of BCCI President.

Vinesh Phogat, during the second phase of wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar on 3 May 2023, accused Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur of suppressing the matter and said that it is challenging to oppose a powerful man who misuses power. He said,
We ended our protest after we spoke to the Union Sports Minister (Anurag Thakur), and all the athletes had told him about the sexual harassment. He tried to suppress the matter there by forming a committee; No action was taken at that time.”
