With the aim of bringing about change, she founded Swayam, a non-profit organization working for women’s rights and ending violence against women in India in 1995. She is its own director and committee member. An organization that began as a women’s shelter has become a provider of direct support services to survivors of violence, working with community groups to create violence-free communities, and conducting public education programs.
The organization is involved in advocacy, research, publishing and documentation work on violence against women and other related issues. Together with Swayam, she played a key role in passing the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 and has since been working to ensure that it is effectively implemented at the state and national levels.
