Anu Aggarwal or Anita Aggarwal is a former Indian actor and model. She is best known for her debut film, ‘Aashiqui’ (1990).

Anu Aggarwal was born on Saturday, 11 January 1969 (age 51 years; as in 2020), in New Delhi. Her zodiac sign is Capricorn. She completed her graduation in sociology from Delhi University.

She was born in New Delhi and was brought up in Chennai. Her father Ramesh Prakash Arya was a teacher at Hans Raj College, Delhi. Her mother’s name is Urmila Arya. Anu has not married yet.
Career
In 1987, she started working in IMRB, Kala Ghoda, Bombay. Later, she started working as a VJ. A modelling talent agent spotted her at the Churchgate station in Mumbai and offered her a modelling assignment.
Later, she did a few modelling projects. In 1988, she debuted as an actress in the Doordarshan serial ‘Isi Bahane.’
In 1989, she appeared in ‘Face of Schweppes Indian Tonic’ as a model. She came into the limelight with her Bollywood debut film ‘Aashiqui’ in 1990. The film turned out to be a blockbuster.
Later, she appeared in various Bollywood films including Ghazab Tamasha (1992), King Uncle (1993), Khal-Naaikaa (1993), Janam Kundli (1995), and Return of Jewel Thief (1996).
In 1993, she debuted in the Tamil film ‘Thiruda Thiruda.’
In 1994, she appeared as a star endorser and VJ in the MTV India launch show ‘Oye MTV’ that later became ‘BPL Oye!’ She left Bollywood after her film ‘Return of Jewel Thief’ in 1996.
Life After Bollywood
In 1995, she realised that films were not her forte, so, after completing the shooting of her last film ‘Return of Jewel Thief’ in 1996, she started travelling overseas. In 1997, she started practising Yoga.
She met with a major accident in 1999. She was driving back to her home from a party in Mumbai. Suddenly, her car ran off the road and smashed on a sand dune. She had many fractures after the accident. She had a skull fracture which resulted in coma and memory loss. She was in a coma for 29 days. In an interview, she said,
I had a brain bleed and a skull fracture. I had gone completely blank; I didn’t have a past,” she says. “I started life all over again, like a child. For me, it was like discovering Anu. I didn’t remember a lot about my movies at all, actually . . . When I look back, I think, ‘Wow, what a life!” My life started from the day I woke up half paralysed, which is when I didn’t even know what the meaning of paralysis was. I existed outside my body. I had many, so-called, spiritually amazing experiences throughout that time. And I saw the other side, where death is finality and mortality, normal… where the death angel rules.”
She was admitted in Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai. Her face was paralysed and twisted to one side after the accident. She slowly recovered and decided to devote her life to Yoga training and meditation. She joined Yoga training centre and became a Yoga trainer in Bihar School of Yoga Munger.
In 2015, she started working as a motivational speaker with TEDx.
In the same year, she published a book titled ‘Anusal Memoir Of A Girl Who Came Back From the Dead’ based on her own life.
Facts/Trivia
- She is a gold medalist in sociology from the Delhi University.
- In an interview, she shared her struggling days story, she said,
I was new to Mumbai and an object of unwanted attention on the road. From my PG in Juhu, I took an auto to train station to Churchgate. To save money I used to walk from there to Cuffe Parade to make one phone call not to complain but to soothe my worrying mother that I was ok.”
- She never wanted to become an actress, it was the director Mahesh Bhatt who encouraged her to act in Aashiqui (1990).
- She is still known as the ‘Aashiqui girl.’
- She has featured on the cover page many renowned magazines.
- She is an amateur power-lifter and competed in many power-lifting competitions post her accident.
- She changed her name to ‘Anand Priya’ while she started practising Yoga.
- In February 2020, she appeared in ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ along with the Aashiqui (1990) actors Rahul Roy and Deepak Tijori.
