Before working as a football referee, he worked as a front-office supervisor at Hilton Hotels & Resorts from February 1998 to December 2000. He worked as a prison officer in HM Prison and Probation Service from January 2001 to July 2013. He later resigned. He left his job as a prison officer to devote more time to his job as a match referee.

He was promoted to the national list of assistant referees in 2005 and promoted to the national list of referees in the following season. His first match in League Two came in August 2006 between Wrexham and Peterborough United. He officiated in the finals of the 2010 FA Vase and 2012 FA Trophy.

His first match in the English Premier League (EPL) was on 3 February 2010 between Fulham and Portsmouth. He was later promoted to the select list of referees for the 2010–2011 EPL season. He went on to officiate in the 2015 League Cup, 2015 FA Community Shield, 2017 FA Cup, 2018 EFL Championship playoff and 2020 FA Cup finals. On 1 January 2013, he became a FIFA-listed referee.

  • On 31 May 2023, in the 2023 Europa League Final between AS Roma and Sevilla FC in Budapest, Hungary, he gave out 14 yellow cards, the most in any Europa League game. After the score was tied at 1–1, Sevilla won the game 5–4 on penalties. AS Roma fans and manager José Mourinho blamed Taylor for their defeat and abused Taylor, his daughter and his wife while they were at Budapest airport. Fans threw his drinks, abused him and one fan even threw a chair at him, who was later arrested. Mourinho was also very vocal as he himself abused Taylor in the airport parking lot.
