Anthony Taylor is a British football (soccer) referee who has officiated in numerous international, national and club-level competitions. His refereeing career spans over 15 years. He went viral in June 2023 when he and his family were abused by AS Roma FC fans at the Budapest airport.

Anthony Taylor, also known as Anthony Taylor, was born on Friday, 20 October 1978 (age 44 years; as in 2022) in Wythenshawe, Cheshire, Manchester, England. His zodiac sign is Libra. Before working as a football referee, he worked as a front-office supervisor at Hilton Hotels & Resorts from February 1998 to December 2000. He worked as a prison officer in HM Prison and Probation Service from January 2001 to July 2013. He later resigned. He left his job as a prison officer to devote more time to his job as a match referee.

He played football while growing up and was exposed to refereeing lessons while playing; However, when he became convinced that he would not be able to progress at the professional level, he decided to take refereeing lessons and become a referee. His mother also played a partial role because whenever Taylor expressed displeasure with a referee’s decision while playing, his mother would ask him to put himself in that referee’s shoes, which had an effect on him. He began refereeing in the local Wythenshawe league in 1995 at the age of sixteen. In 2001, he became a match referee in the Northern Premier League and in 2004 in the Conference North.

He was promoted to the national list of assistant referees in 2005 and promoted to the national list of referees in the following season. His first match in League Two came in August 2006 between Wrexham and Peterborough United. He officiated in the finals of the 2010 FA Vase and 2012 FA Trophy.

His first match in the English Premier League (EPL) was on 3 February 2010 between Fulham and Portsmouth. He was later promoted to the select list of referees for the 2010–2011 EPL season. He went on to officiate in the 2015 League Cup, 2015 FA Community Shield, 2017 FA Cup, 2018 EFL Championship playoff and 2020 FA Cup finals. On 1 January 2013, he became a FIFA-listed referee.

He officiated at the FIFA World Cup 2022 and also officiated the finals of the 2015 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, the 2020 Euro qualification play-off, the 2021 UEFA Nations League and the 2023 UEFA Europa League Final.

- In his first match of the 2011–12 EPL season, between Middlesbrough and Leeds United, he sent three players off the field with two yellow cards. In 34 matches that season he sent off 5 more players.
- Anthony has clashed several times with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger due to his decision-making in Arsenal’s EPL matches. In January 2017, Wenger was banned from the touchline for four games for a heated exchange with Anthony. - On 12 June 2021, Anthony Taylor became a hero when he took quick action to save the life of Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen. This match was a UEFA Euro 2020 match between Denmark and Finland. Eriksen fell on the field while playing and Taylor signaled for medical assistance within five seconds, leading to Eriksen receiving immediate medical care and his condition later stabilized while recovering in hospital. Fans, players, and celebrities such as Prince William referred to Taylor as a hero.

- Ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar, he began undergoing a fitness program specifically designed to adapt to the high temperatures in Qatar. The program involved running on a treadmill in an environmental chamber.

- On 31 May 2023, in the 2023 Europa League Final between AS Roma and Sevilla FC in Budapest, Hungary, he gave out 14 yellow cards, the most in any Europa League game. After the score was tied at 1–1, Sevilla won the game 5–4 on penalties. AS Roma fans and manager José Mourinho blamed Taylor for their defeat and abused Taylor, his daughter and his wife while they were at Budapest airport. Fans threw his drinks, abused him and one fan even threw a chair at him, who was later arrested. Mourinho was also very vocal as he himself abused Taylor in the airport parking lot. He was later seen walking with his wife and dog near his home.
