In his statement to police, Mziwamadoda Qwabe said the couple were victims of a robbery. During further investigation, Qwabe changed his statement on the same day within five hours of his first statement that husband Shrien Devani was planning to murder his wife. On November 20, 2021, cab driver Zola Tongo also confessed that Srien Dewani had conspired to murder his wife.
