Ian Ball, the driver of the Escort, jumped out of the vehicle and began firing a gun. Inspector James Beaton, Anne’s police officer, got out of the car to protect her and disarm Ball.
Beaton’s gun jammed and Ball shot him, as did Anne’s driver, Alex Callender, when he tried to disarm Ball. A nearby tabloid journalist, Brian McConnell, also intervened and was shot in the chest.
Ball approached Anne’s car and informed her that he intended to kidnap her and hold her for ransom, claiming he had £2 million or £3 million to donate to the National Health Service.
