Less than a week after Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell lost her battle with stage 4 cancer, the reality TV star’s family is reflecting on her final days.

while talking to PEOPLE Speaking about his wife’s fight against stage 4 adrenal carcinoma, Eldridge Toney opened up about how he first discovered the cancer. “At first, what we thought were kidney stones was actually a mass,” Toney explained. “But they told us it was stage 2 and she was clear. “When the doctors in Atlanta called us via video conference and told us I was in stage 4, my stomach dropped.”

Toney stated that he did his best to remain calm with Anna Cardwell after she was told the diagnosis. “But Anna did everything she could to stay strong. She was super strong for her family. She was in a lot of pain all the time and we knew what the stage 4 diagnosis meant.”

However, Toney explained that he and Cardwell agreed not to talk to the doctor about the exact timeline. “We agreed that we didn’t want to be told that he’s six months old or something like that. But there was a realistic factor. We knew time was limited but we agreed and asked the doctors not to give us time. “We never wanted to know.”

After the diagnosis was confirmed, Toney and Cardwell married in March. He continued to support his wife non-stop while she went through chemotherapy. Less than a year after discovering she had cancer, Anna Cardwell passed away. She was 29 years old.

As Eldridge Toney continued talking to PEOPLE On Anna Cardwell’s cancer journey, she admitted to making difficult decisions when it came to working and being with her family. Her treatments were performed in Atlanta, which is hours from her home in Milledgeville, Georgia.

“I tried to be there as much as I could,” Toney said. “But we both agreed that the bills had to be paid and that I needed to work. But when she called me, she would stop what she was doing and drive to be next to her. Even when it meant leaving at 3 in the morning to return to work at 6 in the morning”

Toney later said there were times when Cardwell was afraid and ended up staying by his side in the hospital. “That meant taking time off work, without pay, because I didn’t want her to be alone.”

However, Toney stated that he would redo everything he did just to make sure Anna Cardwell was okay. “I wish I could never leave her side,” she added. “But we agreed that she needed to work because bills kept coming.”

Toney held his wife’s hand as she breathed her last on December 9.
