N. Kalaiselvi is an Indian senior electrochemist. On 7 August 2022, she came into limelight when she was appointed as the first woman Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISR). He was named as the Director of CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) at Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu on 22 February 2019. Soon after his appointment as Director General of CSIR, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in a media conference informed that he has been appointed for a period of two years. It said,
Kalaiselvi has been appointed for a period of two years from the date he assumes charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
He has experience in the field of electrochemical power systems, particularly in the development of electrode materials, and in the electrochemical evaluation of home-prepared electrode materials for their suitability in energy storage device assembly.

N Kalaiselvi was born in Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. He has completed his PhD from Annamalai University in Chidambaram. Reportedly, N Kalaiselvi received his entire education in government schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu. His father, who was a teacher, raised him like a boy. During his school days he liked playing boys’ sports.

After completing his PhD from Annamalai University in Chidambaram, N Kalaiselvi started teaching organic chemistry in a private college for three years. In 1997, he started working at CSIR-CECRI in research as an entry level scientist. At CSIR, N Kalaiselvi is known for his contributions in the field of lithium-ion batteries. She is known for inventing new materials used as electrodes to improve the storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries. In December 2000, N Kalaiselvi participated in the 8-ACSSI program in Singapore and Malaysia. Over the years, 2007–2009, 2011–2013 and 2013–2015, N Kalaiselvi served as a member of the Board of Studies at Karunya University, PSG Institute of Technology, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore; Serfoji College of Arts and Science, Thanjavur; And Shri. GVG Vishalakshi Women’s College, Udumalpet. In August 2007, she was part of a two-month technical discussion held at Hanyang National University (South Korea).

In 2011, “Ariga Ariviyal” – a monthly scientific magazine appointed him as its editor to promote science subjects in Tamil for rural students. In 2012, she was appointed as the Nodal Scientist for Multifunctional Electrodes and Electrolytes for Futuristic Technologies (MULTIFUN) and held the position until 2017. The National Mission for Electric Mobility was launched in 2013 under the guidance of Dr Kalaiselvi. Gradually, she moved forward and took over as the director of the institute in 2019, becoming the first woman to hold the post. While holding this position, he was given the additional charge of working as Theme Director of Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy and Devices of CSIR, Chairman and Member of Administrative and Technical Committees of CSIR-CECRI and Chairman of SAC. (Student Academic Committee) of CECRI. In November 2019, N Kalaiselvi was part of the CSIR-DAAD exchange program in Germany. In 2022, he was promoted to the post of Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISR) with the additional charge of Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

In 1999, N Kalaiselvi was selected for the INSA Visiting Fellowship [within INDIA] For the year. From 2003 to 2004, he participated in the Brain Pool Fellowship Program in South Korea. In 2009–10, N Kalaiselvi was selected for the Raman Research Fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. In 2011, he was selected under INSA-NRF Exchange Program of Scientists and visited Kerry, Changwon.

In 1999, 2000 and 2001, he was awarded CECRI’s Young Scientist Seminar Award (3 times). In 2006, he earned a Citation at Marquis in Science and Engineering in Asia. In 2007, she was ranked among the Top 100 Scientists of the Year 2007 and International Scientist of the Year. In 2007, he was appointed as a reviewer for Elsevier, IOP, Wiley, RSC and ACS journals. In 2008, he earned a citation in the special 10th anniversary edition of Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering. Four of his research papers were selected as “Highest Cited Top 25 Hottest Articles” by Elsevier in 2011. In 2015, he was awarded the Materials Research Society Medal (MRSI, Bangalore). In 2019, she was awarded the CV Raman Women in Science Award at the Twelfth National Women in Science Congress held in Mysore.

- One of her former colleagues, N Kalaiselvi, speaking to the media, said that she was an avid public speaker, and during her college and early job period, she would often participate in various public speaking venues, including All India Radio. He said,
Kalaiselvi was a very active participant, and participated in some of these on the local All India Radio station. “This has made him a powerful public speaker.”

- Reportedly, when N Kalaiselvi joined CECRI in 1997, she had no background in electrochemistry and was interested in teaching. In a media interview, he explained that CECRI provided him the opportunity to work as a teacher and researcher at the same time. He said,
I liked teaching. But, I was also keen on research. CECRI provided me the opportunity to do both.

- CSIR mentions N Kalaiselvi’s research interests on its official website. These interests include lithium batteries, supercapacitors, waste-to-property driven electrodes, electrolytes for energy storage, and electrocatalytic applications. According to Dr T Prem Kumar, one of his former colleagues, electric mobility was very close to N Kalaiselvi’s heart. In a media interview, Dr T Prem Kumar said that he was very interested in things that needed better batteries. He said,
Electric mobility… this is very close to their hearts, and it needs better batteries. Furthermore, widespread use of renewable energy such as wind or solar.
- A fast-track construction program of low-cost toilet units using CSIR-CECRI’s technology was launched by them in Chennai in January 2022.

- CSIR-CECRI (Central Electrochemical Research Institute) and Hyderabad-based Godi India entered into a public-private partnership (PPP) to set up a lithium-ion cell manufacturing unit at Taramani, Chennai. This joint venture was launched in July 2022 under the guidance of Kalaiselvi.

- According to the official website of CSIR, he served as a guide to 8 research scholars for their PhD. degree and 6 researchers were pursuing their PhD by August 2022. As of 2022, he has worked on more than 125 research papers and holds six patents.
- While interacting with the media, he once revealed that he received his schooling in a Tamil medium school, which helped him understand science subjects in his mother tongue. He said that learning subjects in his mother tongue helped him a lot in understanding science concepts more easily in his college. He remembered,
In fact, it has helped me understand science concepts quickly and I have built on that foundation when I joined college.”
