Bestselling author Angie Thomas on Thursday awarded a full scholarship to a Mississippi high school student to a private university where she is pursuing an undergraduate degree in creative writing.
Thomas, who is currently on a book tour, made the announcement via video. Students applauded as she announced Ahniyya Myers, a student at Canton High School, as the recipient of the Angie Thomas Writers Scholarship for 2023.
Thomas commented: “When I read Ahniyya’s writing samples, I fell in love with her craft. Her intelligence and competence amazed me and I am sure that a student like her was targeted as the creative writing program developed.
Thomas, a 2011 graduate of Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, is remembered by the name of the scholarship. The foundation announced in a press release that it was established to help young, aspiring authors who need more help to realize their authoring ambitions.
According to Thomas, by receiving this scholarship, Ahniya will be able to focus more on her studies and writing, which will help her talent grow. We are honored to learn that this scholarship can be instrumental in helping to develop another outstanding writer.
Myers is the fourth student to receive this award, which helps pay for tuition and accommodation during four years of college. “Ahniya embodies both the spirit of the Angie Thomas Scholarship and the potential of the Angie Thomas Scholarship,” said Dr. Randall Smith, professor and dean of the university’s creative writing department. The Belhaven University writing community is delighted to welcome Ahniya to the BFA program, where we support each other in developing our skills, discovering our writing goals and realizing our potential.
