Showtime just revealed that American Gigolo was canceled after the first season, bringing the interesting storyline to an end. Starring Jon Bernthal became one of the first shows to face the ax following the unexpected merger of Showtime and Paramount+, something the CW shows are all too familiar with.
The merger resulted in a change of opinion and tactics, culminating in the cancellation of the other two series. Let the Right One In and Three Women suffer the same fate as American Gigolo, though the latter two may find new homes elsewhere online. This reimagining of Paul Schrader’s classic prostitution saga could be more challenging than other canceled shows, due to the first season’s low ratings and critical backlash.
More about American Gigolo
It would not be true to say that American Gigolo was no longer attractive in its heyday. It was never able to live up to the high standards set by the original films, written by one of the best films of the New Hollywood era, but it just lacked the credibility of the first. We can’t guarantee that the series will improve, but as it is, it never stands a chance.
This is all the more worrisome as the film had a difficult pre-production process. Production began in 2016, but it didn’t materialize until years later, thanks to a new producer, David Hollander, who has worked on shows like Ray Donovan. This is far from the conclusion of the story. After Hollander was fired for misconduct, new host David Bar Katz also quit shortly after the season started. After much deliberation, it was awarded to Nikki Toscano and Russell Rothberg. The tragic story of the American gigolo continues as the sitcom will most likely never be seen again.
Summary of the series reads:
“Julian Kaye, a former gigolo released from prison after 15 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, struggles to put the pieces together as the detective who kept him behind bars tries to solve the problem. solves the mystery that led to his incarceration.Julian attempts to reconcile his escort background with the man he is now by reuniting with his ex Michelle, his difficult mother and other sex workers. true love, Michelle.”
Gretchen Mol, Lizzie Brocheré, Gabriel LaBelle, Leland Orser and Rosie O’Donnell appear in the series. Premiere of American Gigolo.
