Family, Caste and Husband
He was born in a Hindu family. She is a descendant of the wealthy Dalmias, who built the city of Dalmia in Bihar. She married ‘Ashok Ruia’, a wealthy businessman, who died in January 2019. He has three children – a son and two daughters. His son Atul Ruia is the MD of Phoenix and Palladium Mall. His daughters Sharmila Dalmia and Kavita Khaitan are married.
Career/Water Harvesting Work
She became emotional after watching footage of the Rajasthan drought (in the late 1990s) on TV and decided to help the people suffering there. To solve the problem of water scarcity he established ‘Aakar Charitable Trust’. She built her first check dam in Mandawar village in Rajasthan, which is also her husband’s native place.
He built about 200 drinking water ponds between 2000 and 2005. By the end of 2017, nearly 200 check dams were built in more than 115 villages in Rajasthan. The Trust provides 60-70% of the resources and contributes 30-40%. By the villagers. He has also extended his support to other states, some of these states are Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Dantewada in Chhattisgarh. She joined the NGO ‘Grammangal’ to support educational facilities in rural villages. Their main objective is to promote girl education.
